SCHOOL EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT INVOLVEMENT BURNSVIEW COURSES (with activities that extend outside of the classroom)

• Leadership 10-12 – Spirit Days, Care Package and  Teddy Bear Drives, organize intramurals, canned food drive, school enhancement initiatives

• Environmental Studies Immersion 10-12– maintains 3 school gardens, 1 community garden and initiates other school enhancement projects

• Social Justice – ongoing awareness projects and school and community initiatives

• Français langue 8-12 – Concours d’art oratoire – public speaking contest,

• Sciences humaines 9 – Defi (personal challenges)

• Film and Video – competitions, school promotion projects

• Desktop Publishing /Media Design – yearbook/photography/writing/design

• Info Tech/Computer Studies – school enhancement, tech. support/website design

• Drama/Theatre/Creative Writing – plays, musicals, slam poetry competitions, field trips

• Music – concerts, VSO Partnership Program, field trips

• Art – art shows and school enhancement projects

• PE 11 – trained as scorekeepers and referees for our athletics program

• Peer Tutors – assist teachers in all subject areas

• Work Experience/Secondary Apprenticeships/Academies/Ace It Programs

PULLOUT PROGRAMS DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

• TechStretch, WriteStretch, ScienceStretch District pullout enhancement programs

• Take Our Kids to Work (Grade 9s – Nov. 5)

• SafeTeen – for all Grade 9s – assertiveness and safety training program

• Ms. Abel’s Girl’s Group – self-esteem building – admittance through referral

LUNCHTIME

• Computer Lab – open room

• Science/Math – open rooms and teacher help

• Library – open room

• Church – open games room

• Senior Study Area/lounge – open room

• Cafeteria – open room

• Gym – open gym or Intramurals (seasonal) – volleyball/basketball/badminton, World Cup soccer

• Textiles – open room and teacher help

• ELL/ESL/International/LA – open room and teacher help 4 or 5 days a week

• Monthly grade specific hot dog lunches at the Church

• Foyer – various individual and group fundraisers and awareness campaigns

• English Corner – Room 110 (conversation for International students with student volunteers)

ATHLETICS

• Weight room

• FALL/WINTER – Volleyball, Basketball, Boys Soccer, Running

• SPRING – Track & Field,  Girls Soccer, Ball Hockey, Badminton, Rugby, Golf

OTHER

• Volunteers receive service hour credits for helping with photo day, fee collection day, parent information nights, Parent Teacher Conferences, Grade 7 visits,, PA announcements, sign changing

• Grad Council – help plan the Boat Cruise, Fashion Show, Snowball, Red Carpet, Grad Banquet, Valedictory, Spirit Days, and other fundraisers

• DYAC – Delta Youth Advisory Council – youth forum that meets monthly at each of the other Delta high schools and presents to the Board

• WE Group – various humanitarian awareness events, Vow of Silence, 30 Hour Famine

• Encounters with Canada – Youth Forum in Ottawa

School Opening/Awards Recognition Remembrance Day – includes band, film, yearbook, and drama student participation

Christmas & Year End – includes staff video, yearbook photos slideshow, and  band, film and leadership student participation

June –  Awards Ceremony

March Break School Trips – to a variety of countries

Variety of Guest Speakers :
– Grade 8-10 – Social Media Safety and Responsibility (e.g. Darren Laur or Jesse Miller)
– Grade 11/12 – Driving Safety – various ICBC speakers
