Provincial examinations at the grade 10 and 11 levels were eliminated for the 2016/17 school year. These exams are being replaced with Literacy and Numeracy examinations to be written during the student’s graduation program. These assessments are broad-based measures of literacy and numeracy skills relevant to daily life; they are not measures of content in specific Mathematics or Language Arts courses. These examinations are still being developed and will have the purpose of providing system-level information in the areas of literacy and numeracy. They will serve as a common graduation requirement for all students and will provide students with evidence of their proficiency in literacy and numeracy for use after graduation.
The Numeracy exam was introduced in the 2017/18 school year and is a graduation requirement. The Literacy exam is expected to be released in the 2018/19 school year at which time it will replace the present Language Arts 12 exam and will be come a graduation requirement.
Students in grade 12 are required to write the Language Arts Provincial examination attached to the required course taken by the student. Courses with a grade 12 Provincial examinations are English 12, Communications 12 and/or Francais Langue 12. (This examination is worth 40% of the student’s final grade in the course.)
