Recognition in the following areas is earned at the end of each term. Students can determine if they have received recognition by checking the Activity tab in Student/Parent Connect. Students must be registered in 6 or more classes at Burnsview.to qualify for Honour Roll or Principal’s List recognition.
Honour Roll
Honour Roll recognition is given to students who achieve at least an 80% average during a reporting period.
Principal’s List
This recognition is given to students who achieve a minimum of 86% or Extending in each and every subject during a reporting period.
Students who excel in academics, service, sports and individual subject areas are recognized annually. Grade 12 award recipients are recognized at the Valedictory Ceremony in June. Grade 8-11 award recipients are recognized during an assembly in early September of the following school year.
Academic Achievement Awards
This award is earned by students who achieve a minimum 80% average on the Final Report/Written Summary. Students must be registered in 6 or more classes at Burnsview to qualify for this award.
Scholastic Achievement Awards of Distinction
This award is given to students who have attained an outstanding level of achievement (at least 86% or Extending) in all subjects on the Final Report/Written Summary. Students must be registered in 6 or more classes at Burnsview to qualify for this award.
Athletic Award
This award is based on points earned through athletic ability, leadership, sportsmanship, and attendance. Points are accumulated through participation on one school team or a combination of school teams.
Service Awards
This award is presented to students who have contributed 25 or more hours of service to the school on their own time during the current school year. Bronze Award 25-49 hours; Silver Award 50-74 hours; Gold Award 75+ hours; Platinum Award 100 + hours.
Specialty Awards
These awards are presented to students who have shown significant improvement, achievement and special interest in a particular subject area. Winners are chosen by each department according to individual department criteria.
MAJOR AWARDS:
Silvia Johansen Memorial Award
This award is given in memory of a former Burnsview student and is presented to one or more deserving Grade 8 students who plan to further pursue the field of performing arts.
Ambassadeur de l’immersion francaise / French Immersion Ambassador
This award is presented to a student who demonstrates exceptional enthusiasm for learning the French language and actively seeks out opportunities for language enrichment.
Director’s Award
This award is presented to a student who has shown outstanding instrumental ability, dedication to the program and who is a true inspiration to all musicians.
Renaissance Award
This award recognizes outstanding contributions to fine and performing arts at Burnsview.
Perseverance Award
This award is presented to a student who serves as an exemplary model of perseverance to others in that they demonstrate excellence in the ability to continually work hard toward a goal even when it would have been easier to quit. They show self-control and persistence to work toward a goal though they may experience substantial delay or difficulty in achieving it. They also exemplify strength in body, mind and personal character to pursue a goal because it is the right thing to do.
Outstanding Citizenship Award
This award is presented to a Burnsview Secondary student (Junior and Senior) who is kind, inclusive, respectful, empathetic, and ethical. This student shows a strong sense of community-mindedness and personal accountability, and is able to work toward an ideal future for the world.
Outstanding Female Athlete
This award is given to a female athlete (Junior and Senior) who demonstrates outstanding athletic ability, sportsmanship and leadership.
Outstanding Male Athlete
This award is given to a male athlete (Junior and Senior) who demonstrates outstanding athletic ability, sportsmanship and leadership.
Outstanding Scholar
This award is presented to a student (Junior and Senior) who has maintained outstanding scholastic achievement throughout his/her Burnsview years.
Outstanding Senior Student – Griffin Cup
This award is presented to the Grade 12 student who has demonstrated excellence in all aspects (scholastic, service, citizenship, athletic) of his/her Burnsview years.
